Bebashi is spreading holiday cheer with food and toys for families in need

The local nonprofit launched its new community fridge initiative and distributed turkeys and toys to families in the community.

Philadelphia, PA (December 23, 2021) – The holiday season can be a difficult time for those in need, but local nonprofit, Bebashi – Transition to Hope is spreading some holiday cheer in Philadelphia’s communities.

The organization, which was founded in 1985 as an HIV/AIDS full-service organization dedicated to serving low-income people of color, is helping families in need with several initiatives for the holidays.

On December 17, the organization unveiled its community fridge, located at its Spring Garden Street office. The fridge, which was installed and decorated in collaboration with Backyard Diamond’s Community Fridge and the Nirbhayam Project, is an addition to the organization’s Food First Pantry and aims to improve access to food in the community.

“There are many people in our city who are hungry and struggle daily with providing their families with nutritious meals,” said Janice Tosto, Hunger Relief Supervisor. “The community fridge makes healthy food accessible to anyone who needs it, when they need it, and provides an opportunity for the whole community to join together to help those who are experiencing food insecurity.”

The fridge is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and the organization contributes approximately 150 pounds of food per week, which could feed a minimum of 15 families per week. Members of the community are invited to help stock the fridge with items such as dry goods, canned foods, fresh fruits, and vegetables.

In addition to the fridge, Bebashi spent the Christmas week distributing turkeys to families at Willard Elementary school, one of the schools from which the organization operates a community food pantry, as well as distributing toys to children in the community.

“We are so grateful for the support we have received and continue to receive from persons who want to make an impact in the community and have donated food and toys for those who need help,” said Sebrina Tate, Executive Director. “All of these initiatives that we have put in place were done with one goal, to empower our community, and with the combined efforts of our donors, volunteers, and dedicated staff, we have been able to help over 100 families this holiday season.”
