Prevention
Education
BEBASHI provides culturally
sensitive education workshops to several target populations most
at risk for HIV infection. These populations include adolescents,
women and men with a history of substance abuse and men who have
sex with other men. We also sponsor and take part in Health Fairs
in schools, neighborhoods, and churches.
HIV/STI
and Pregnancy Counseling and Testing
BEBASHI provides
anonymous or confidential prevention counseling prior to and after
HIV antibody testing in 10 locations throughout low-income neighborhoods
in Philadelphia. BEBASHI also provides confidential Syphilis,
Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, and Pregnancy screening in the same locations.
The community sites are actually partnerships with community organizations,
schools, substance abuse rehabilitation programs, and churches.

Care
Case Management
BEBASHI
Case Managers:
Ameenah McCann, Lataya Parker,
and Danielle Costo.
|
BEBASHI provides
intensive, professional social work services to approximately
500 persons living with HIV/AIDS. Masters and Bachelors degree
level Social Workers conduct a thorough psychosocial assessment,
develop a comprehensive plan of care, conduct support groups,
provide brief individual counseling and link clients to the many
available community services including housing, medical and home
health care, and nutritional services.
Prison
Discharge Planning
Our largest
Case Management program is "Transition to Hope"; a dischage
planning program linking HIV+ individuals, newly discharged from
county, state and federal prisons with primary medical care, housing
and other services. Transition to Hope also provides medication/adherence
training through specially trained, HIV+ Peer Treatment Associates
(PTA's), to teach people living with HIV/AIDS about how to take
their medications
Housing
Counseling
BEBASHI provides counseling
and advocacy concerning landlord/tenant rights and responsibilities;
and housing discrimination; conducts assessment of housing needs,
completes housing eligibility and energy assistance applications
and provides information and referrals to persons living with
HIV/AIDS.

Syphilis
Elimination
BEBASHI provides
targeted outreach, prevention education presentations and testing
to prevent the spread of Syphilis in specific high-risk areas
of North Philadelphia. This initiative is part of a five-year
Syphilis Elimination grant in conjunction with the City of Philadelphia
Department of Health.
Care
Outreach
Care Outreach identifies
HIV+ individuals who are currently not receiving HIV primary medical
care and/or behavioral health care and helps to link them into
treatment. The program provides three elements of outreach: referrals
directly from BEBASHI's own counseling and testing program, following
up with clients who have dropped out of care from four Philadelphia
HIV clinics, and linking HIV+ individuals newly released from
Pennsylvania state prisons into medical care.
Informal
Support
BEBASHI offers support
groups for various populations of people living with HIV/AIDS
in several areas of Philadelphia. BEBASHI also operates an emergency
food cupboard to those infected and affected by the virus.

Women's
Initiative
BEBASHI provides case
management services targeting HIV+ women and HIV+ women who have
children who are not positive. The overall objective is to provide
a comprehensive assessment to identify specific needs, develop
a plan of action with specific goals that will link the women
to primary medical care, formal and informal community services.
To further enhance the quality of life of the women, the project
offers therapeutic support to focus on drug adherence, self esteem,
life skills, risk reduction education and job readiness.

Nutritional
Support
Nutritional
Support offers non-perishable food items and food vouchers to
persons infected and affected by HIV disease. Most food is donated
through the state-run SHARE program, while some is purchased through
the local Greater Philadelphia Food Bank.
The
New Pathways Project
The
New Pathways Project is a collaboration with PHMC on a federally
funded program which will provide outreach, pretreatment counseling
and case management to substance abusers in North Philadelphia.
BEBASHI'S
HYPE Program (Helping Young People Excel)
BEBASHI
‘S HYPE program combats STD, HIV infection, and teen pregnancies
among adolescents through a continuum of services designed to
increase perception of risk, develop knowledge and skills to reduce
that risk, and develop strategies to successfully sustain behavior
changes. It also ensures that youth receive linkages to appropriate
health care and other social services. This continuum of services
includes outreach, counseling and testing and educational workshops.

Adolescent
Obesity Education Program
The goal
of this program is to identify high risk African American adolescents
between the ages of 12-19 years old, and educate them about the
risk factors associated with obesity.. Our intent will be to encourage
behavior change and empower youth to make healthy lifestyle decisions
that will not put them at risk for obesity, which can lead to
other life threatening conditions in adulthood. Understanding
that obesity is easier to prevent than treat, we focus our program
on prevention of obesity.
The Adolescent
Obesity Education Program will focus on three areas to combat
obesity: physical exercise, diet management, and behavior modification.
Adopting a moderate exercise program, or simply becoming more
active, can be a valuable tool to prevent obesity. Through exercise,
studies have shown blood lipid profiles and even blood pressure
to improve in children that were overweight. Moreover, reducing
caloric intake in food can be the easiest change to implement
for this group. A balanced diet with a moderate caloric restriction,
coupled with nutrition education is also highly effective in treating
and preventing obesity. Many behavioral strategies used with adults
have been successfully implemented with children and adolescents.
These include self monitoring of food and exercise activity, slowing
the rate of eating, limiting the time and place of eating (i.e.:
eat at a table, not on the couch in front of a TV), and using
rewards for and incentives for desirable behaviors. Typically
behavior based strategies are most effective when parents are
involved.
BEBASHI conducts
workshops during classroom and after school programs, community
centers, and housing projects. We also distribute information
at health fairs and other sites where we display literature. Workshops
will provide a pre test to assess knowledge of participants, including
whether they have been recently seen by a medical provider, if
they have any underlying medical conditions that relate to obesity,
and how involved the parent is in the children's meal preparation.
During the workshop, body mass index (BMI) will be measured to
assess weight relative to height. A BMI over the 95th percentile
has been used to also define obesity.

Diabetes
Intervention Project (D.I.P.)
The goal of the project is to identify high risk African Americans
who have not been diagnosed with diabetes, educate them about
the need for screening and refer them for medical assessment.
