BEBASHI
to Host Town Hall Meeting Discussing HIV in the Black Community
On Thursday,
October 26, BEBASHI will host “HIV in the Black Community,”
a town hall meeting at the Community College of Philadelphia. From
6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. community members of the Philadelphia region
are invited to actively take part in this “tell all”
summit.
The town hall
meeting will include a panel of HIV professionals, community leaders,
and individuals who have been diagnosed with the HIV/AIDS virus.
Also, 100.3 the beats will be on hand with music and give-aways.
“The
goal of this Town Hall Meeting is to provide an interactive discussion
addressing the perceptions and myths associated with the HIV/AIDS
epidemic,” states Gary Bell, Executive Director of BEBASHI.
“It is our hope that members of the community will come together
to field questions from the panel participants and learn how to
stop the spread of this disease.”
“HIV
in the Black Community” is free to the public and will include
refreshments, educational materials, and free HIV screenings. Notable
panel participants include E. Steven Collins of 100.3 The Beat and
BEBASHI board member, William Brawner.
All members
of the community are encouraged to take part in the town hall meeting
to be held at Community College’s Winnet Student Life Building.
Founded in
1985, BEBASHI was the first black HIV/AIDS services organization
in the United States. Through its continuum of HIV/AIDS prevention,
advocacy and direct services including street outreach, counseling
and testing for HIV, sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy,
Case Management, Housing Counseling, Care Outreach, Support Groups
and a Food Cupboard, each year, BEBASHI touches the lives of approximately
15,000 people. Our mission is to provide culturally sensitive health
related information, direct service, research, and technical assistance
to the urban community.
