In 2002, the
United States experienced the first major increase of new AIDS cases
in the last 10 years. Almost one million people in the United States
are living with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS and over 460,000
people have died. In the United States, African Americans make up
12% of the population, and account for half of new HIV infections.
And in Philadelphia alone, it is estimated that 16,000 people have
AIDS.
BEBASHI was
founded in 1985, in response to the increasing incidence of HIV/AIDS
in the African American community of Philadelphia. We are a full-service
HIV/AIDS case management and prevention agency with a special interest
in serving people of color with HIV disease. Our mission is to provide
culturally sensitive health related information, direct service,
research, and technical assistance to the urban community. Our programs
are designed to meet the needs of the underserved community and
educational efforts focus on street outreach to areas of the community
most in need of prevention information and direct care services
and the least likely to receive it. In 2003 alone, we provided services
to over 14,000 people, and over 500,000 individuals since 1985!
