EVENTS  Dancing In the Streets - June 27th, 2003                                                                            PRESS RELEASE

Imagine a warm summer night and over 300 people dancing in the streets and celebrating under the stars to commemorate National HIV Testing day at the steps of the historic Philadelphia Museum of Art!

Staff from Squarebiz and BEBASHI set up for the
evening's activities.

This free event sponsored by BEBASHI was held at the steps of the art museum in a festive block party style from 7:00 pm – 12 midnight on Friday June 27th. Noted tri-state DJ - Rich Medina - graciously donated his time to provide music that evening as well as African Percussionists, lead by Lady Alma added to the evening. Sunkist Soda also provided their truck that opens out to a fully equipped stage with sound and hosted a talent contest that gave local Philly talent an opportunity to showcase their skills – the winner walked away with $1000 cash prize and the opportunity to advance to the national competition.

BEBASHI tested over 65 people for HIV via OraSure and featured the new rapid response test – OraQuick where results are available in 20 minutes! The first 25 people tested for HIV via OraQuick received concert tickets to the Frankie Beverly, Maze, Anita Baker, and Jaheim concert.

Dancing in the Streets could not have been pulled off with the enormous support received by the community. BEBASHI would like to recognize GlaxoSmithKline, Squarebiz, Sunkist Soda, 103.9 The Beat, The Fairmount Park Commission, Abbott Laboratories, Agouron Pharmaceuticals, Dr. Helena Kwakwa, and Whole Foods Market. A special thanks to Stacey Wilson, E. Steven Collins, and Joe Callan for their undying effort and continued support over the last three months!

Remember…knowing your HIV status is an essential step in taking control of your life. Join us again in 2004 as we dance in the streets to celebrate National HIV Testing Day.
